Mary Daly’s The First Whole Book of Diagrams is designed to use along with a regular grammar program.  The spiral notebook progresses from simple subject/verb diagrams all the way through subordinate clauses, verbal forms, and apposition; numerous sentences of each time are diagrammed for you, and Daly’s brief essays cover the reasons behind the diagramming conventions.  As you progress through your grammar text, you can stop and diagram each part of speech that you learn; drawing a picture of the part of speech will help your child remember and understand its function.  "Syntax is absolutely necessary to language arts," Daly writes.  "Diagramming is just a tool, but it is the best tool for learning syntax."

The accompanying Elementary Diagramming Worktext provides exercises in each sentence type, along with answers so that you can check your child’s (or your own!) work.  Highly recommended, especially for those of you who have chosen grammar programs that don’t do any diagramming (shame on you!).
