Question McGuffy readers

I'm still stumped on post OPGTTR reading for 1st grade next year. I was recently talking to a hs'ing friend about some suggestions for what I want. She said I need some type of "lit book". Basically and all in one volume, here is what you should read/do next kind of curriculum.

So I started looking at the McGuffy readers. Can any of you share your thoughts on these? Does it come with a teacher's manual? How have you used these? Does it work on comprehension type stuff?

McGuffy Readers are just a collection of stories that get progressively harder, so that your student is continually challenged. The goal is to build fluency not necessarily comprehension. There are no teacher's guides or comprehension questions, but you could certainly ask them. You could use them next or just check out leveled readers from the library. Just keep her reading!

Oh, I almost forgot, you can download them for free from google books.

I didn't realize you could get them free! I will definatley get them then, even if I only use it as a supplement.

The non-free versions do come with teacher's guides.

There are some by Mott Media:

(Can't find the other at the moment.)

I'd like to own a set of Elson readers, myself (I have the McGuffey's--mine are from the 1920's though, not 1800)

Wat you want are the ones published before Dick and Jane. http://books.google.com/books?prints...AJ&output=html

These, too are available at Google Books.
