What do you think? Which of the Noeo science books would be good books to read to expand RS4K, since it is only written for 10 weeks? I'm trying to make chemistry last the entire year. Here are the books I'm considering:
Early Biographies: Marie Curie True Books Series: The Periodic Table Hydrogen and the Noble Gases Calcium Carbon Oxygen A Drop of Water Simply Science: Atoms Simply Science: Solids, Liquids, and Gases Are these good living books to add to our chemistry year? If you have seen/used these books I'd love your input! Thanks!

Oh just get the whole year! I just say that because we really enjoy the Noeo books and read them much faster than scheduled. I would think you could add them all in with the 10 weeks in RS4K. So in addition to your list, two that we've already read that are also good are What's Smaller than a Pygmy Shrew and How to Think Like a Scientist. Dd enjoyed Rocks and Minerals a lot--so much so that we did it first before the chemistry stuff. But it isn't really a chemistry book--Noeo throws it in to touch on geology.

Are the books just living books? I really don't want to do more experiments than what I'll be doing in RS4K. You recommend them all, huh?
Hmmmm, I'm going to have to think on this some more. I *do* like the idea of more books on the subject of chemsitry....

I was just wondering why you would combine the 2 programs? Is it to get the best of both or are you unhappy with parts of each?
I would just like to learn a bit more as I am trying to decide what to do for science next year with a gr.2. We did NOEO Bio I this year. I like NOEO for the most part but I felt it was "lacking" a bit although I can't entirely pin point what it is that I felt it was lacking. I was considering just doing Chem I for next year but your post has me intrigued. Have you used RS4K before? Is it good? Thanks. Last edited by Canada_Mom; 02-15-2008 at 03:28 PM. |

Well, I really, really like the looks of Real Sciece 4 Kids Pre-Chem 1. It is a text book approach which I like for science. I don't have to pull out 5 books to figure out what we're studying for the day, KWIM? But, the draw back to RS4K is that it is only for 10 weeks. I know it will take me longer than that, but I'm just wanting to round out the year with some good books about science. My boys will be in 1st and 3rd along with the preschooler and baby.

The Noeo experiments are pretty much just the Young Scientist Club kits and the book Super Science Concoctions. You could skip that book if you don't want more experiments. Other books might mention something to try (i.e. Periodic Table book this week had dipping both steel wool and sterling silver in white vinegar and leaving out for a day to see what happens--steel wool rusts), but you can easily just read about it and not do it.

Quote:
My problem is that NOEO schedules these books for 5-7 days of reading, and we can read them in a half hour! Which has made it good - I can do a whole week's science in 1 day

I know this is an old thread, but I was just wondering how this worked out for you? I'm considering it myself.

I decided that it would be too difficult and I felt the cost would be prohibitive too.
