View Full Version : Any other singers teaching their own kids?

I'm a classically trained singer who is homeschooling my dd4. We'll be (sort of) moving into a really slow 1st grade next fall when she's 5. While we sing constantly around the house ("And now it's time for 'Silly Songs with Mama, the part of the show where Mama comes out and sings a Silly Song!":D), I was trained under the "don't teach a girl younger than 16" doctrine and hadn't considered doing any vocal training for years yet. Then, I ran across a book at a Choral Director's Convention titled "Innocent Sounds I" by Marie Stultz. The author claims to be able to teach basics of vocal technique to 5-8 yros. Has anyone heard of this before? It's published by MorningStar Music Publishers. It's based on a children's choir experience, but I could modify it for "fun" use, I think.

Next question: Do you have any experience using Kodaly with your kids? I've attended a few lectures on the system (definitely not trained in it) and it seems like a good, active method for younger kids. Any thoughts? (The book I found was Hal Leonard's "Kodaly in the Classroom, Set 1.")

Thanks!
