So far I'm considering the "8 volume adventures from Around the World Devotional" series and the "Ten Boys" devotional series ("Ten Boys that Changed the World", etc.). I've looked at Grace and Truth Books and titles such as "Teddy's Button" and "The Little Medicine Carrier"Tiger and Tom" stories to me.

Does anyone have comments about these or other titles?

I'd also like to know if any of the books are too "dated" in language or too "in your face" or preachy in approach. I'm looking for books that teach godly character--both those that mention God and those that don't.

My sons are 8 years old and are reading the "Freddy the Pig" series right now. That is an easy level for them so I would like books at that level or slightly above.

TIA for any help or comments you can offer!

Vision Forum and Lamplighter publishing has wonderful character building stories for boys (and girls).

Teddy's Buttons is a wonderful book about little boy who gives his heart to Jesus and becomes one of God's soldiers. It is one of our family favorites. I highly recommend it.

Vision Forum also has many books for building character in boys. A great company with a good Christian mission.

I would encourage you to check them both out.

Teddy's Button was one of the "free picks" from Timberdoodle when we ordered last year. It may still be in the "free library" (you have to order something to get a free book, of course). I haven't read it, but my sons have, and liked it.

What we used for that age was "Wisdom and the Millers." It is published by Rod and Staff. They have more storybooks than that,
"School Days with the Millers"
"Storytime with the Millers"
"Prudence and Your Health"
"Missionary Stories with the Millers."
The Rod and Staff series are Mennonite in nature, so the pictures have the women wearing head-coverings. We still used them because they are soooo good and wholesome. My youngest is 10 and still loves them.

More by Rod and Staff are:
"Tattletale Sparkie" and "The Missing Popcorn," both of which have a different story with each chapter, all centered on family life, devotions, and character building.

There are more, but these are what I recall that we used and loved.
