diagnosis finally!

We have a diagnosis. I went to the neuro-psychologist office today to get the results of my sons testing that they did two weeks ago. They told me that he has Non Verbal Learning Disorder. I will know more about this when the doctor sends his full report to me in the mail. Does anyone else have a child with this disorder? He answered most of my questions, but I would love to know what kind of math would be suitable for this kind of child. My son is struggling this year to learn his multiplication and his losing his other facts in the process. Sorry this got so long. It has been long process, and I am thrilled to just have a diagnosis.

I don't know about now, but there used to be some mothers of NLD children who posted on the forums at http://www.ldonline.org .

A woman with NLD used to post there too. She said what worked for her for math was a very patient tutor who allowed her to ask questions about the most minute details of math as she worked through it. NLD children tend to do best with verbal approaches for math -- lots of talking about math -- and tend to not *get* manipulatives. From what I have heard of it, Professor B seems to be more of a verbal approach to math than other programs.

I"m mom to 9yr old Carmen with NLD or NVLD as it's sometimes called. It seems to be one of those LDs you've never heard of until your child or someone you know is diagnosed with it. Carmen is now in 3rd grade and I'm finding that the older she gets, the more challenging this condition. Our biggest problem right now is social skills--or her lack of them. I read scores of books on social skills training to try and teach her how to navigate her world.

Good luck with helping your son. I looked up the Professor B math curriculum and am interested in pursuing it as Carmen also struggles with the abstract concepts in math.
