My son is in 5th grade does well in math and is an
average reader. He is a poor speller and writer.
I've decided to do phonics road to spelling and writing.
We've started at the beginning and he feels dumb down.
But feel his phonics aren't strong to apply to spelling.
We are taking it at a quicker pace than if you were doing this with a younger child. He missed RUN today-
I'm not sure if he thought I said RAN or if He just can't
hear the difference. Though he can spell some third grade words he just isn't consistant. I love the program.
Any advice on how to make it work better. He's frustrated!!! Carol

This is our third year using the Phonics Road. I am extremely pleased. You are right to go back to the beginning. There is no other way to build that strong foundation in the basic phonograms. How does he do with the cards? And how about the dictation when you say a sound? That is soo important. My son is very "externally motived," and I give him a little prize at the end of each week completed. Often it's a Ranger Rick or some other educational magazine that I collect at used book sales. Or just a little something special. Prizes and games can really change the demeanor of a boy! When he starts to gain confidence and see his spelling improve, he may also get a little spunkier. Is that a word!? :001_huh: I hope this helps. I just love the program, and it's nice to meet someone else using it.
