DS has been singing parody songs from a favorite comedian (somebody Higgins...a christian comedian?) for two straight weeks now. They were funny the first time through. Not the 30th or the 300th. It has now reached the point that he sings in the car, at the table, in the shower, at the computer....no matter how many times I ask him to stop, he can't seem to help starting up another chorus. Today I threatened a run around the block for every line of music...that worked for a little while. WHEN will this stop???

WHEN will this stop???

when it's replaced by some other annoying habitual action .....

Yes, it will stop when something sillier comes along to replace it with. Right now, it's random movie quotes CONSTANTLY from my 15yo. These quotes are always followed by "what's that from." I don't watch the same movies he does, and never, ever know what it's from - but he always. asks. me. anyway.

My ds constantly takes his watch off his wrist and twirls it around. It drives me INSANE!

I don't know if it's a "14yo" boy thing, but it's definitely a "thing".

I have heard Brian Regan's Spelling Bee Routine in Spelling every day for past two years. And his "I before E" Routine every. day. several. times. a. day. for so long, I think I am living in a looped universe. Before that, it was Jeff Dunham's Peanut and the Jalapeno on the stick "Day at the Spa" Routine.

I guess I could count this as a 1/2 credit of "practicum in public discourse". Think that'll fly?

My son is 11 and does the same thing. I think he gets it from me as we sang "So long and thanks for all the fish" every day for dh until he forced us to stop. :001_huh:

Am I a glutton for punishment or what? My 14yo son likes Christian comedy also, so when I read your post, I did a search for a Christian comedian named "Higgins" thinking my son might like this guy. I couldn't find him. Maybe that's for the best. I don't think we need any more nonstop annoying habits around here. :)

Speaking of 14yo habits, my son has straight hair to the eyebrow, a little over the ear. He constantly jerks his head to make sure every hair is in place. It's gotten to the point where he look like he has a nervous tick. My daughter's friends have even asked her why he does that. I have considered making him get it cut short. He's kind of insecure, and he thinks his hair looks "cool" the way it is. Most of his friends have hair shorter than his, though. Anyway, don't want to "scar him for life" by making him get it cut, but don't want him to get whiplash, either. :) Any suggestions out there?

it's the comedy of Tim Hawkins, Christian homeschooling dad and comedian extraordinaire! My two boys can recite word for word all of his jokes to the point that I now know them as well. At least he's a funny guy. :D

Okay, I'm a little slow today. . .

This is the same guy my two love to watch and mimic!!! He really tickles their funny bone. His name is Tim Hawkins. You can see him on youtube

My son likes him, too. I guess there's a lot worse out there they could be reciting word-for-word, huh? I shudder to think!

That's it! That's the guy. I may write him a curse/fan letter. I did like the line (which I now hear 5 times/day) about parents burning down Chuck E. Cheese.

We have the hair thing, too - but ds has agreed to cut it if he wins at sectionals and gets to go to state 4-H speech competition. Not 'cuz Mom says so, but because one of his judges at county speech day commented on it.

Or I can only eat margarine... I hear that one every time the butter is on the table.

I swear my ds did not read this thread yet he just now put in "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and cranked the fish song again.:lol::lol:

It's not just boys. My girls will sing a song or quote a comedy routine until I have to impose a limit. "No discussing xxx at the table, ever." "You may only sing xxx twice a day within my hearing range." :001_smile:

The problem is they are excellent mimics and will get lots of laughs at first and that just encourages them.

Don't worry there will always be another movie, TV show, book, etc. for them to obsess over.

My family loves Tim Hawkins! My daughter was filling out some survey and one of the questions was if you were stranded on a desert island with only two songs on your ipod, which two would they be? One of her choices was "Cletus, Take The Reel."

At least, if you have to hear it over and over again, it's clean!

Tim Hawkins is great! Problem is... all those songs he's making fun of from the 80's...my son wants to download the real song to his ipod. Although I LOVE Tim Hawkins humor surrounding them, I don't approve of the songs before he "remakes" them. Enjoy these annoying habits, next he'll be 15, then he'll notice girls. I'd rather have the annoying habits.

It is at my house! He's always repeating something verbatim. Over and over and over..... If I really can't stand it anymore, I just start singing an old elevator music tune (the same one, over and over) and he stops. For a little while!

LOL - I started singing a praise chorus and - of course - it was one Tim Hawkins had "rewritten" and ds just came back at me with *those* lyrics. I have threatened him with hymns instead.

These little annoying things will pass. Then you will realize how grown up they have become and miss these times. (That is where I am now)

Bless you though while you endure.:)
