...or should I start my ds in R & S 2? He just turned 9 and I don't want to under or overwhelm him.
Thoughts appreciated,

I would start him in 3. I started my older 2 in 3 this year after only dabbling in FLL a few years ago and they've done fine.
My ds6 is doing 2, and I don't like it nearly as well as 3. It moves really slow (the first 25 lessons are on what a sentence is).

R&S 3 can seem overwhelming at first, because they ask the child to do so much writing! But, you can do the lessons orally, for the most part, which takes away the stress.
I'd say, "Go for it."

Yes.
1. Do it 95% orally. (My daughter usually has to write something, just to get used to it and because doing punctuation orally is cumbersome.)
2. My daughter was 8 when we started--and at times it seems a bit "below" her, FLL was such an excellent foundation.

Thanks ladies! I think we may partially be through FLL 2 when we start, so I feel confident about starting R & S 3 either way.
Have a great day!

You certainly can skip 2 and start with 3. Besides doing things orally, I {shhhhhh} sometimes photocopy the page and let my kids mark that rather than doing all the writing. Or, purchase an extra student text and let them write in it. I do the vast majority of it orally, though.

Yep, do R&S 3 and do a lot orally.

I've gone straight from FLL to R&S 3 with 2 kids so far and it worked well. With my son I did a lot orally. My daughter did more of the writing but still not every problem.
