We have been using Singapore since the beginning & are now entering 3rd grade. I just don't think it's working for DD. We do enjoy the colorful textbooks & the way the concepts are gently presented. I did some research here on the boards & I guess I should've been teaching & having DD memorize math facts along with using Singapore, which I didn't realize. We have used the "intensive practice" books, but the facts just don't seem to be "clicking". Maybe it is because she doesn't have the facts memorized. She still has to count on to figure out 7 + 3 or 6 + 4, etc. She just recently is picking up on the idea that if 6 + 5= 11, then 6 + 6=12. DD doesn't seem to have a natural math aptitude. According to Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks, she is a Perfect Paula & Horizons is the recommended program. I've read here that it is spiral and sometimes "spirals out of control". I don't think this would work for us! Should we:

1. Switch to a different mastery program that includes memorization & more drill?

2. Over the summer, memorize, memorize, memorize with drill practice, then continue with Singapore?

3. Something else?

Cost is somewhat of an issue since DH has been unemployed for several months now. I feel terrible that I didn't know to have her memorize the facts. She is my first homeschooler, but still. TIA!

We like R&S and it is cheap. It is mastery with lots of review. But, you'll find that others think it is too slow. I love the way it really cements the basics and the progression of problems. My kids just finished R&S 5 and I think we will skip R&S6 and move on to R&S7 which solves the whole slowness issue. However, with my more math averse child I may have to do R&S 6.

We supplement Singapore with Flashmaster for math facts during the school year, over the summer we're going to do RightStart math games. The Flashmaster is a very efficient way to get in a lot of math drill, and much more fun than a worksheet.
