I have all green boxes by thoese that left a comment. I recieved one rep today that is grey but no comments at all. Does it actually say that it is positive or negative? Or is it by the color of box?

Did your total points stay the same or go up? If so, then it was positive (staying the same could just mean that they have no points to give). If your total points went down, then it was negative.....

I think negative rep shows up as a red box. A gray box just means that the person who left the rep doesn't have enough posts (or maybe enough rep themselves?) to "count" as green. I'm not 100% sure about that, though. Maybe someone else has better information?

Clear as mud, I know...

From what I see, I believe the gray boxes are the negative. I've received a few so far...and here I thought I was non-controversial...lol.

Anyway...I personally am all for getting rid of this. Has the company stated why we have this feature? I see it as just a way of people getting their feelings hurt.

I've used it to only give positive feedback and would never dream of giving anyone negative feedback.
My opinion is: if you don't like what someone has said, then just ignore it. :p

It is as Plaid Dad states: grey boxes are from newbies. Nothing negative about them.

From an "experienced neg. rep collector" (heheh)

Red is definitely negative
Green is positive

Gray is from someone who does not have a high enough post count to leave anything but neutral. This is done so that people don't sign up under fake names (which has been done) to "fling" rep just for the sake of flinging. This is meant as a deterance for both positive and negative rep. It's just to prevent "rep flooding" (which is the same as post flooding)--basically to prevent "cliques" from happening.

If you have no red, count yourself lucky. ;) Gray does not decrease or increase your points in any way--only green and red do.

I think it serves a purpose. It is a nice replacement for all the ITA posts. Instead of cluttering up the board with ITA, send the poster a rep.

As for the negative reps, well, the way I see them is that if someone sends me a neg rep with constructive criticism it gives me a chance to check my attitude. Nobody has to know I got it, nobody has to openly slam me for something I said. They can just discretely say "That was not nice" or whatever. Much better than being reamed publicly on the forums!!! And since it is anon, I don't know who it is, so I can't suddenly develop a dislike for that poster just because he or she disagreed with me.

I want to be gracious and encouraging, but I am human. If I get snarky I guess I deserve to be told so. Keeps me humble!!!

Excellent, Kelli. I'd sling some rep at you for that if I could! http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Respect/woot-035.gif (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/%5BIMG%5Dhttp://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Respect/woot-035.gif%5B/IMG%5D)

Kelli, I hadn't thought of it like that before. I think that if someone would just say please use kinder words, that would not be so bad, a way to keep posters kind. Better than doing it on the boards.

I have 14 points: 4 green boxes, 1 grey. So mathmatically I can't make it out? Or does each on equal different points?

I don't know for sure but I think maybe the higher the rep of the repper, the more points their rep is worth. Maybe. But I am just guessing. But it seems like some rep affects my total points more than other rep. I think that difference is based on the reppers point value. But I am still really only guessing.

Don't you love how the admins did not put this in the FAQ and they just leave us to wonder? Kind of like when you watch your children shaking the Christmas presents!!:D

Edited to add....I am not 100% sure but it seems like some rep I recieved from someone today who has a very, very high rep count of their own may have raised me as much as 10 points with that one rep. But then the one you left only affected my point total by 1 point. Not that I don't appreciate that 1 point!!

don't forget also that you are only seeing 5 at a time.. so no, you don't have a higher rep=more points awarded thing--you've only gotten 14 points but are only seeing the last 5.

So we can't see any beyond the last 5?

I had no clue!

Yes, you can only see 5 at a time. ;)

:) Thanks Holly..

And I do know that you get 10 points for starting or something like that--I think.. but I'm not sure on the higher rep = gets you higher points bit. Peek is pretty high and when she leaves me posrep--It only goes up by one...

So I don't know...

Just curious, there are still so many things that don't make sense to me.

Yes, you do get 10 points just for starting, but if you get Rep from someone who is really far up the food chain you will get 10 points. Peek is high up, but there are others who are higher, and their rep is worth more than even hers. :D
