My son is in 3rd going to 4th right now but I have to say that his comprehension skill are very poor. I am looking for something Easy to implement...any thoughts. He really needs help with reading the story then going back and finding the answers if he doesnt know it from the reading.

I really like Early Reading Comprehension in Varied Subject Matter (what a mouthful). You can buy it at www.epsbooks.com.

How about adding fun to your Easy and still getting the job done?
Check out Reading Detective. It comes in both book form or software. I got the software and both my boys enjoy it and it does seem to be helping them in this very area.

I second the Reading Detective series. I used it with my boys in 3rd (and will continue in 4th) specifically to address the issues you describe with your child. It is really good. There is a short story and then a series of mostly multiple-choice questions. What sets this series apart, however, is that for each question, the child must also identify which specific sentence supports their answer. It is wonderful and has helped them with their comprehension immensely.
Good luck!

I second Reading Comprehension in Varied Subject Matter. I have used it. My kids learned quite a bit. It is hard but good.

How about Visualization and Verbalization. It is a great program to teach the student how to picture what is being read so that comprehension is higher.
It is very easy to implement.
I also highly recommend Varied Subject Matter.

I had planned on using BJU reading 5 for next year. But, now, you guys have me thinking about these other options. :001_smile: Do you all recommend using these over a formal reading program like BJU??
I don't mean to jump in and take over the post. I was just very curious about the answers, and now I'm wondering if I should rethink my plan!:tongue_smilie:
Thanks!
