I am so thrilled that I bought these! I've been dancing for joy ever since dd7 started reading them, and asked for more!:D
My dd7 has been struggling with reading. We are a little over halfway through OPG and she dreads that book! None of the other readers we had did anything for her at all. She loathed Bob books, and all the readers that came with SSRW.
A few weeks ago I ordered the Pathway readers for both 1st and 2nd grades. My hope was that I could have her read the early ones well and gain confidance. We are reading one or two "chapters" a day, plus I have her doing the workbook. She loves it! She even asks to do more! This is a girl that usually says, "Aaaww, Mom! Do I haaaave tooo!" Now she is reading these stories quickly and easily! I know the first book is very "see spot run, run, spot run!" but I am doing a jig over here for joy right now!
We are still plodding along with OPG. it is helping quite a bit, but she just dreads it. I wish I had come across these readers earlier! Now they will be here for the next two!

LOL... I could have written this post a year ago!
My dd7 really did not like OPGTR so I found pathway readers... I started her reading them with the workbook and soon realized she didn't even need the workbooks. we did the first and second one for first grade and then continued without them.... She started the second grade book yesterday and she is so proud of herself.... She even pulls them out over the weekends and asks to read me a story! The stories are so cute and simple but yet funny and interesting!
I am so glad that you like them..... One of the blessing of homeschooling is finding something that works under the large pile of stuff that doesn't work!:D

and all sorts of funny family things because Peter and Rachel grew up with each of our kids. My favorite part is when "Dad did something to Andrew... or Rover etc." No one here had any confusion over what it was that Dad really did!

He loved the first couple grade levels, and would even bring them to park days with our homeschool group!

http://www.timberdoodle.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=404 has samples to view online.
They are made by and for the Amish, so they might seem "old fashioned". Dd7 did have to ask what a buggy was, and I explained what I know about the Amish..probably not too much. We do live in the country and the kids have a little red wagon that they like to ride in so the first few stories dd could totally understand. I'm still on cloud nine about this...yeah!

Rod and Staff books has samples of the readers, workbooks and teacher manuals. Although you don't need the workbooks, ds likes them and the phonics books, Learning Through Sounds are good reinforcement at a low, low price. Here's the link:

R&S will have its annual 10% off sale starting March 3 :)!

They are so wholesome and the children find them interesting. FI am planning on ordering more of them (we have 2 right now.) I'm glad you found them and that your daughter likes them so much.

We love Pathway Readers here, too. All 4 of my dc have used them (we go up through the 3rd grade readers).
I've actually been a little sad in the last month or so as my youngest dd began the 3rd first grade reader; I'll list the first grade ones for sale this spring and it will be hard to let them go. We all have such nice memories of them beginning to read while enjoying those stories :)

I started using Pathways readers when my second child was finishing up Alphaphonics and just needed a little something more. She loved them, and in the 14 years since then 3 more children have loved them. As my youngest was getting close to the end of Alphaphonics his older sister was trying to encourage him with "When you get to the end of Alphaphonics you get to read the stories in those reading books. You will love them!"
And he got the end of Alphaphonics and with great excitement we pulled out the Pathway readers for his reading rite of passage....
And he hates them. Absolutely hates them. I mean it is okay, there are lots of things to read. But I am crushed that he does not love what everyone else loved.
Pathway readers are a family tradition. How dare he break tradition?

I am a Pathway Readers lover! I am sort of wishing we didn't have another full LA program so that we could do the workbooks, but we enjoy the stories anyway.
I also used the Learning Through Sounds, Before We Read and Helping Yourself to teach ds to read.

Just wanted to chime in that my dd's both loved them. They took them from not enjoying reading to loving it. They have moved on from them but I will always attribute thier love of reading Pathway Readers.

We are fans here as well. Even my son who thought everything was dorky, liked these stories and asked to read more.

Do you think girls like them better than boys?? In general? Or not? Just curious.

I'd say NO. Matter of fact, many if not most of the stories are about boys.
