Can anyone recommend a book I could get on how to write your own IEP/PDP? Would love to hear from others who home school outside of the public school system who have done their own PDP.

I'm just curious--why would you need to write an IEP if your child isn't in the school system? What else are they used for? What is a pdp?

I am trying to get things in order BEFORE I have to notify the state. I will need an PDP (privately developed plan) at that point. An IEP is a guide to use for the PDP so I can get an idea of what to keep track of or goal setting. She won't have an IEP because she won't be part of the public school system. Up until the IDEA act whet into affect our county here could mandate that any child with special needs get tested through the public school system. They went so far as to send out letters to home schooling families asking them to turn in other families that they knew so they could contact them about services/testing. This issue is not one that I want to look back and wish I had done something different. I have found through my other son who is older and has CAPD and is language delayed that if you are prepared they will leave you alone. My son doesn't have a PDP because he barely meets the bench marks. If he isn't able to meet this year's bench marks I will be forced to do a PDP for him also. My son and daughter are two different issues - my daughter must have a PDP because she has Down Syndrome, where my son doesn't because he has met his prior bench marks. HTH

Wow, that is wild. Do you mind if I ask what state you are in? I know the laws are very different state to state, but sometimes I forget how much we have to be thankful for here in Missouri where no one cares what we do!:001_smile:

I am in Oregon. Overall Oregon is very, very easy to home school in. I really have only found bumps in the road when it comes to special needs children that are outside the public school system for everything.

I had to create an IEP for my homeschooled daughter. The military needed one for the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). We tried to tell them that she is homeschooled and does not have an IEP, but they insisted on one anyway. So I made one using the link below as my guide/template...

Most states don't require anything different from parents of dc with special needs.
Sharon Hensley wrote a book called, cleverly, Homeschooling Children with Special Needs (http://www.shekinahcc.com/parenting-special-needs.htm). I believe she has a son who is autistic (?). I have not read the book so I can't comment on its content.

It's an IEP book with accompanying software. Very thorough and easy to use. http://www.ieps.net/index.htm
