View Full Version : What are my options for continuing phonetic instructions at 4th and into 5th grade?
I have a 10yo who struggled in the beginning to learn to read. She is progressing nicely now and about to complete Phonics Pathways, plus some phonetic workbooks. I'm looking for materials that I can use (beside simply reading) to make sure she continues to improve her reading skills. She does very well with a combination of sit down time with mom and individual time with workbooks focused on writing and reading phonetically. Her workbooks do not need to correspond to our oral reading lessons, but I do want to continue both styles. Any recommendations?

HOP - Master Reader is a combination computer lesson and reading package that will take your dd to a pretty good level of reading. My son really enjoyed it.
That's the only product I know of that isn't "babyish"

We are using Spectrum word study and phonics for 4th grade. It is basic, not colorful, but good basic study.

I would check out the Explode the Code workbooks. They have helped us a lot here.
good luck!

Megawords is a wonderful program. If the first book is too difficult, then you should probably work through Phonics for Reading 3 from Curriculum Associates.
My youngest is dyslexic. I had her work through Phonics for Reading 2 and 3 and now she's using Megawords.

The Spectrum books are excellent for this (and inexpensive!)

I was going to suggest these as well. I'm going through them with my 10ds who is also being tutored in reading. I would suggest making flashcards of the rules at the beginning of each lesson and reviewing them every couple of days. It is too easy for my son to do the work without thinking about the rules. When he stuggles with a word, I remind him of which rule he is using or needs to use.

I would highly recommend Rewards Intermediate (http://store.cambiumlearning.com/ProgramPage.aspx?parentId=019005486&functionID=009000008&site=sw). It explicitly teaches a multi-syllable word attack strategy that is very effective, and the program itself is efficient and easy to use. If you still want more after completing that program, you can follow up with Rewards Secondary (http://store.cambiumlearning.com/ProgramPage.aspx?parentId=019005487&functionID=009000008&site=sw). These are *excellent* programs for moving a child on once basic reading skills are in place. They are completely scripted so there is no teacher prep. Cost is about $100 new with shipping (you need the TM as well as a student workbook). If you buy two workbooks, you can resell on the swap boards for about half price.
RI wasn't available when my dd was 11yo, so RS was out and I used that. It brought her reading up about 3 grade levels!
Others who post on the Special Needs Board have used Rewards. You could probably get more comments about it over there.
