Hi ladies. I have to first say thank you for all of the wonderful info you post on these boards. I've learned so much from you all.

My dd will be in 7th grade next year and I'm trying to figure out what to do with her for math. We're using Saxon 7/6 this year and it's going just OK. She is not a mathy girl and she has struggled quite a bit this year. She reads the lesson then watches the lesson on the DIVE CD. I then usually still have to go over the lesson again with her because she just doesn't GET IT easily. She needs a lot of handholding.

So for next year I'm considering either BJU Fundamentals of Math or Lials BCM. I have seen the BCM text but not the BJU. Does anyone have any input or opinions on these two programs? Has anyone used the BJU DVD for this class? I'm wondering if I do go with BJU if I would just be able to teach her or if I should go with the DVD teacher?

For someone who doesn't get math easily which program would be better for her???

I appreciate all your suggestions. Thank you!!

and for a girl that age I would suggest the BJU, because it's written to kids of that age and Lial is written for college students (Lial looks more intimidating because of its size and small print as well).

Some of the examples in Lial are adultish type situations such as car mileage or taxes, not that that's bad, just that kids don't necessarily identify with it.

I think the explanations in the BJU are good, too.

The Lial has tons of practice, way more than BJU.
But the BJU has a separate book of student activities, which I haven't seen, and maybe that could provide more practice. And, I'd just take it as slowly as she needs to.

So, without having looked at both of them just now, and going on what I remember from both, I would say BJU.

Just my 2 cents. Maybe someone else can chime in with more information on either program.
Blessings,

Jann in TX is a big help when it comes to questions like this. She seems to be the Math Guru on the boards.

If she doesn't chime in here, perhaps you could ask her a question directly, or search by her name. There have been lots of questions asked about the Lial series and she is always very helpful.

Just a thought

:iagree: Lials is not as homeschool friendly as BJU. Lial's is not open & go.

Thank you ladies. Has anyone used the BJU DVDs for 7th grade math?

It is just hearsay from the Yahoo group, but I have heard that Mr Harmon (who gets outstanding reviews) is re-taping the Fundamentals of Math class this summer with the new textbook. I don't know if it will be available this year though. BJU is notoriously slow for keeping the videos up to date with the textbook revisions.

The current dvd edition with Mrs Sedivy gets mixed reviews (for the teacher, not the content). As with any teacher, some like her and some don't. I think placement is a big part of whether Fundamentals works for a student. It is meant to be a solidifying year for students who need more time to mature and master elementary concepts before moving to Pre Algebra. While some students need this time, some are ready to move ahead and will be bored, thus hating the class kwim?

Have you watched the sample video?

I have both and found BJU a much better fit for us.

You can look at sample pages on the BJU website and Christianbook.com.
