View Full Version : Beth in Central Texas (another question about Omni)

I am trying to find someone locally so I can "lay hands" on this, but I am having a hard time.
Can you tell me how you break out the secondary readings to use for your literature? Are the primary readings scheduled separately from the secondary readings? Or are they all commingled in assignments? I guess I should ask if there even is a schedule and, if so, how it is laid out.
Also, the same question would apply to the discussion questions? Are they set out for primary and secondary readings separately?
Someone on the K-8 board characterized the secondary reading discussions (at least for Omni II) as more worldview analysis of the books rather than literary analysis. I guess I am confused! What is the difference? Maybe I should post this as a different thread!?

Hi Cynthia,
The Table of Contents for Omnibus I has each book listed under one of these 4 headings: Primary Books First Semester, Primary Books Second Semester, Secondary Books First Semester, Secondary Books Second Semester.
Each book has its own introductory information and sessions. The books stand alone which is why I've been able to pick and choose the books I want to use. There was one reference to an earlier Chronicles of Narnia book in one of the later books of the series, but that question could have been easily skipped.
I would agree that the Omnibus series is more of a worldview course which is why they give literature credit for the course, as well as, theology credit. The questions are more open-ended and broad in scope. I really like Chris in VA's idea of using Spark Notes and incorporating more specific literary analysis in the Omnibus readings.
HTH!

I found an example of Omnibus I at the VP website: http://resources.veritaspress.com/downloads/OmnibusSample.html
I think this will help you see how the program is laid out.

The fact that they are separated out by book clearly makes this doable for me!
However, I can't imagine getting through all the reading of Genesis and discussing it in an hour a day in a week! Wow! Although I am sure your children like my boy had already read Genesis in its entirety previously.
I really think this is the way I want to go. Even though there won't be sparksnotes for ALL the books, there will be for some. Trying Omni for secondary books first will allow me to decide if we can ever attempt to use the program in its entirety.
Thanks, again!

So, it looks like the teacher manual is only on CD-ROM? Is this correct? If so, did you take it somewhere and have it printed?
Am I correct - I buy the student text and the CD-ROM for $100?
Thanks again!

Yes. I'm not planning on printing it out. I'm going to read it off my laptop. But you could just print out the sessions with the answers. It would be very costly to print it all out.

Yes, the student text and CD rom is $100. I've purchased all of my copies used so far.
If I were going to do more of the books, I probably would have professionally printed the teacher notes. Instead, I just printed out the answers (in quick print) each week before we tackled the book. I placed them in a notebook to use for my next son.

Well, I'm not super keen on this, but it won't keep me from using it. I wonder where I could take the CD and have it printed and bound? How long would all the teacher notes and answers be??
I am glad you suggested only printing the answers and not EVERYTHING! Duh!

You could probably take it to Kinko's to get it printed and bound. We are doing The Screwtape Letters this week, and it had 14 pages of teacher notes. Julius Caesar had 25 pages of teacher notes, but Isaiah only had 8 pages. If the teacher notes average 15 pages, then I probably printed about 345 pages of teacher notes. Yeah, my notebook looks that full. I wasn't sure if I was going to use this program, so I didn't spend a lot of upfront money. I'll probably get the entire teacher CD printed & bound for Omnibus II next year.
