My son received an invitation to join the National Society of High School Scholars. Has anyone heard about this? I looked it up online, and it seems pretty impressive. It does have a membership fee though, so I don't want to join until I know more.
The odd thing is, he is only taking one college class. Yes, he received an A, but still it was only one class. He does receive A's from the classes I teach, but the only one someone has a record of is the college class.

We were feeling frustrated that, as a homeschooler, she wasn't eligible for the traditional honor societies. I looked into the homeschool-specific one, but you need a club, and that wasn't going to happen for us.
So, when she got an invitation to NSHSS, we went for it. Basically, we wanted something to put on her resume.
After the fact, there was an article in our local paper that had not very nice things to say about the organization. It wasn't anything terrible, but basically said that NSHSS wasn't much of anything.
Here's an article I found online that covers the basic points: http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0304/HS_recognition.asp

My son was invited, so he joined. We haven't received anything out of it except being able to list it as an "honor" on his resume. It doesn't seem to offer much.

Exactly. And, from what I now read about the organization, it probably doesn't mean much on a result, either. Any admissions officer worth his or her salt would know the group's reputation and ignore it.

Thanks, this was very helpful. My son said he thought he received the invite because on his PSAT he listed his GPA as above 3.5 But, he noted, he could have actually been failing all his classes and still marked that box. My son was not very impressed with their accountability. I think we will save the money.
