The discussion about Apologia General made me think....what else is out there? I would gear it toward middle elementary so that my kids on both ends of the spectrum could get something from it.
But what other texts are out there that are enjoyable and that include experiments and/or projects?

Just curious.

Well, after my dd requested to start General Science a year earlier I went on a mad search and found this (http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/PDFs/GeneralScience.pdf). Now, if I decided to use this I will keep everyone on the same topic, which was what I was wanting to do.

I would say 501 Science Experiments (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/501-Science-Experiments/Estelle-Longfield/e/9781741811858/?itm=2), Science Smart (http://www.amazon.com/Science-Smart-Projects-Exploring-Marvels/dp/140271436X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239236279&sr=8-1) and the How Science Works (http://www.amazon.com/How-Science-Works-Readers-Digest/dp/0762102497/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239236355&sr=1-1)(series) by Readers Digest.

As far as curricula is concerned, it seems that R.E.A.L. Science (http://www.pandiapress.com/real_science.htm) (1-4) comes quite close.

This is not exactly a science book that has experiments, but it is right up our alley - solid information, stunningly beautiful and detailed photos, and a range of topics. It's called "One Million Things: A Visual Encyclopedia" and is by DK. You can search inside it here:

I don't know anything about these books, but I saw them earlier. They sound like they fit the bill.

What a phenomenal book! Did you see that they are coming out with One Million Things: Animal Life and One Million Things: Planet Earth this summer?

No, but thanks for letting me know! This one is wonderful enough (seriously - we keep stealing it from each other to go read on our own) that I will definitely get the others! :D
