We've used Volumes I and II and loved it. The craft cds were not available when we went through it, but I'm sure it would have added a nice touch. I loved that on busy weeks we could do *just* the book and quiz questions, but when we had time we could add more.

We also listened to SOTW on audio along with MOH; the two were a wonderful combination.

Could anyone add what ages you think MOH would be best for?

maybe from about 1st or 2nd up to 4th. There is not enough material included for middle school years. While the author gives lots of research suggestions for the older children, having your child constantly researching can really be a strain on your time and energy. That was our experience with MOH 1. We were doing so much extra researching and supplementing for my 6th grader that we felt like we were writing our own curriculum!

If you don't mind all the research or you're looking for a very general intro it works well. Of course this is just our experience, and it really depends what your goals are and what your children are like. I've got a DS who is super interested in history and remembers all the bits and pieces he hears and reads from all the various historical books and dvds he's looked at and heard. MOH just wasn't enough.

And enjoyed it very much. Mine was part of the Winter Promise"Quest for the Ancient World" course. I found the course very time-consuming as there was so much reading. I was thinking that the Mystery of History could easily be used all by itself (with a few books on the side for added interest) and the notebooking pages that Winter Promise sells.
They go with MOH chapter by chapter and they are great!

That it true of MOH 1, but not of volumes 2 and 3. After Linda published MOH volume 1 and started writing volume 2 she asked the users what they wanted. The overwhelming answer was more, longer lessons and more detail. Thus there is quite a jump between volume 1 and 2. Volume 3 was written at the same level as volume 2 and volume 4 (the last volume) will also be at the higher level.

I used MOH 1 with Sweet Pea when she was in 1st grade and because she is an auditory learner/history buff we were able to do volume 2 with her in 2nd grade. She still says it is her favorite history book. I think it would be a bit much for most 2nd graders through. Just more detail than a child that age needs. The next time I use it my ds will probably be 3rd grade.

What do I like? The conversational style, like Linda is sitting right there talking to you, and the Biblical World View and that the easiest level of activities really are easy. :D
