. . . this is what I know so far my then-10-year-old son will be be reading next year to go with our ancient history theme:
Walking the Bible (Kids' illustrated version)
Top 10 Greek Legends: Zeus on the Loose
Horrible Histories: Rotten Romans
Detectives in Togas
Aesop’s Fables
Children’s Homer
Place in the Sun
The Golden Goblet
Gilgamesh the Hero
D’Aulaire’s Greek Myths
Boy of the Painted Cavel OR Dar and the Spear Thrower
His list for this year includes about three times that many books, though, so I am still foraging for more. Specifically, I'm still looking for interesting titles focusing on ancient India, China and Mesoamerica.
Science will also be a reading-heavy subject next year. We're doing a history of ancient science theme, which will include having him read:
Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way
Archimedes and the Door of Science
Galen and the Gateway to Medicine
Science in Ancient Rome
Science in Ancient Egypt
Science in Ancient Mesopotamia
Science in Ancient Greece
Science in Ancient China
Science in Ancient India

We are using Beautiful Feet Ancient History this year - the only subject with "readers" in it:
Pyramid by David Macaulay
Tales of Ancient Egypt by Roger L. Green
Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt by Elizabeth Payne
The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
The Children's Homer by Padraic Colum
D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths by Ingri and Edgar D'Aulaire
Theras and His Town by Caroline Dale Snedeker
The Ancient Greeks by Don Nardo
Augustus Caesar's World by Genevieve Foster
The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth Speare
The White Isle by Caroline Snedeker
City by David Macaulay
If you mean "classics" for literature, I leave that up to my ds10 to discover on his own. This year he has discovered and devoured all of Jules Verne's work - 20,000 Leagues under the sea, The Mysterious Island. . .
He has read some Tolkien - "The Hobbit", and has "Lord of the Rings" on hold.
He also loves to read WWII history.

I don't know whether or not I can give you a "top 9". We will be doing a LOT of mythology next year, using D'Aulaires, Bullfinches and others.
He will read the Zemen Gilgamesh series on his own. These are the simpler books that I read aloud to him the first time we did ancients. I really like them and he's certainly not ready for the more complete version of this story, LOL!
I'm actually going to do Golden Goblet, Bronze Bow, Eagle of the Ninth, Silver Branch, and some of those as read alouds, I think, simply because I love them so much and want to get to read them, too! I don't know - if I can't find other reading for him, maybe I'll give up on that dream....
He's reading Stanley's Cleopatra; a Jr. Illustrated library version of Arabian Nights; Archimedes Takes a Bath; Usborne Trojan War (their version of the Illiad) or another Illiad version; various biographies from Ten Kings, Meltzer; The Librarian Who Measured the Earth; Ides of April; Usborne Stories from Around the World....
I don't know if I'm going to let him read any of the Evslin mythology books, or not. I've got to pre-read some of them again to decide.....
As you can see, I'm still scrounging. I've been back through the SOTW I activity guide to see if there's any more reading for older students that I left out first time around, but I don't see anything. I've got to move on next to archived lists!
Let us know what you find!

Well, you aren't alone - I was thinking the same thing and I'm not pregnant. :D:o
