Anyone have any opinions on which is better :) Also, has anyone taken any online courses for Latin and can relay their experience? I am looking at Memoria Press' online course for Highschool Latin I...has anyone had a student take a course through Memoria Press?
Thanks for any info!! :001_smile:

Henle is Catholic; Wheelock's features "Sententiae Antiquae," sentences adapted from ancient Roman authors.
Wheelock's teaches classical pronunciation; Henle, ecclesiastical.
Henle is targeted at high school students; Wheelock's, at college-age students. Both are sometimes used for younger students, though.

We use Henle (and we like it fine) but I just found a free beginning Latin course (http://ocw.usu.edu/History/beginning-latin-grammar)at Utah State University that uses Wheelock's. There are readings and worksheets under the course content link; I haven't used Wheelock's so I don't know if they are taken from the book or are extra practice.
Hope that helps someone!

We've used both Henle and Wheelock's. Ds used Henle during 7th and probably 8th grades (he worked at it about a year). He understood it very well, because the student book does such a great job of teaching. I didn't have to do much explaining to ds. I did, however, get frustrated with ds because he wasn't memorizing the vocabularly. I finally got fed up and told him I was signing him up for Wheelock's. He did Wheelock's through Scholars Online in 9th grade. That was a big mistake! The teacher required far too much work, so ds was spending large portions of his school days on Latin. We decided not to continue with Latin and moved to Spanish. If I had it to do over again, I would enroll ds in the Henle course through Regina Coeli.
I've also used some of both books. I did half of Henle I, keeping way ahead of ds so I'd be able to help him better. But before that, I did the first eight chapters of Wheelock's. I liked it, but I decided to switch to Henle because of the reading material in Wheelock's.
I'm not Catholic, so I made notes for ds by the sentences with Catholic theology that differed from our beliefs.

I haven't used Henle, but both of my older sons completed Wheelock's in high school. I'm not sure if my third son will do that or not. He is such a different type of learner. We will probably at least attempt it, and go to plan B (not sure what that is yet) if he is struggling. He will start Wheelock's next year in the 10th grade.
