DD6 is in Kinder this year. We do math, phonics, reading, some light spelling(mostly for me to explore), nature study, SOTW Ancients with lots of stories and activities...she enjoys school..history is her favorite...here's the question....for PreK we did FIAR and therefore did unit studies on Japan and other places. I would stretch these out to two or three weeks and pull in alot of activities for a specific country. Well, she has been telling me lately that she misses "The times we studied something for a long time, like when we learned about Japan or Appalachia". I know what she is missing is unit studies. Story of the world does skip around a bit form country to country and I am not sure what to do. Do I satisfy her with a unit study of something she is interested in? Do I ignore this and keep on our present course? And the biggest question to me...is she missing something in our present way of doing things? Any ideas on this? And please forgive any typos or poor sentences. I'm down with the flu!

Why don't you simply rearrange the presentation of SOTW by country so you get to camp of Egypt or Asia for an extended period of time? There are lists at donna Young's site that do this for you. My favorite unit study is MFW (mfwbooks.com) if you are ever interested.

age. They have a great message board with helps on ideas for the books. We just have some sweet memories using those books. Can't wait for my dc to use them with our grandchildren! :)

and apply it to SOTW right now. She enjoys the subject, you have the skills...

So do your history geographically rather than chronologically this year if you want! Add even more library books and outside resources and get the most of your activity guide (play all the games, cook all the meals). There doesn't have to be a dicotomy between "unit studies" the way you have been doing them and "history". You have a teaching method that works for you and engages your daughter--even though you've moved on to a new subject matter doesn't mean you can't bring your own teaching methods right along with you!
