Is there some trick to scrolling down the threaded portion in "hybrid" mode?

I'm getting really frustrated when I want to see the "tree" or threaded portion of a thread so that I can choose where to jump in to read...but when I try to scroll down that portion, I end up scrolling down the entire page of replies. KWIM? I have a new laptop so my touchpad is just fine. It's so hard to find what I want in these threads. :(

You have to keep your curser within the hybrid box in order to scroll down that box. I also have to wait for the whole thing to load completely before I can scroll down the box, or it hangs up and then the whole page starts scrolling down.
