Dd takes these chewable kids Omega 3's. I want to make sure she is taking enough. It says that there are 200mg of "DHA Blend" in each serving. It appears to come from hispanica seed extract and marine algae. I seem to recall that these sources are not as good as the fish oil. Is this right?
Dh is getting some fish oil in liquid form. I could giver her a half dose of that according to the manufacturers.
If your kids take fish oil for behavior type issues how much do they take?

Dr. Edward M. Hallowell of the book "Driven to Distraction" & others suggests a child have 2.5 grams daily of omega 3 fish oil and adults have 5 grams.

every day and I can definitely tell if she doesn't!! I take 3 as well but could up mine. I have read that if you need to take a fairly high dose inorder to see an effect.

better. I think the plant based forms you need to take more to get the same effect. I also am rusty but I think that the algae based forms are not best for those with a history of depression. But I am a bit fuzzy on the details right now.

If you child takes 2-3 grams of fish oil how long did it take to see a benefit in their behavior? Is it a dramatic difference? Do you have them take it in the morning or at night?

I have dd take them at night because she chews them and smells like a fish. Hey they go down. I call her the 80 lb salmon. LOL by morning you cannot tell.
The first effect I saw was a calmness to new sitations. She used to freak out when trying something new.

We are all taking nordic naturals. Ultimate Omega. My kids can swallow the pills with no problem...and it is the only one we take that has no after taste. It does leave a lemon after taste....which is fine! I havent tired the liquid...but these are large gel pills.
Any tricks for hiding the fish oil in food? Everything I've tried, my kids can taste it.

I tried to get my 2 sons to have a Dr. Sears strawberry chew yesterday and my older son gagged on it and threw it up! My 2nd son would not touch it after that! I too need altenatives!?

My ds loves chewing these:

pricey though considering I try to get him to chew 6 a day. sometimes I get him to chew three of these and a couple of Nordic Naturals chewables which are flavored gel caps. These two brands are the only ones he can stand so far without completely gagging. He doesn't gag at all on the gummies and is just a bit reticent of the NNs. In theory, he should be getting about 2 grams a day. I don't think we usually make that mark.
edit: I don't think the item in the link has all that much EPA/DHA/etc... but ds will get them down which is a kind of improvement. I put a little bit of flax oil in his pancakes when I mix up the batter, hopefully the heat doesn't change too much of that. also could put a little flax oil in at the end of frying something. My ds will eat "chicken fries", like Tyson "anytizers" or from ALDI (one of the only processed foods in our house and I understand all of the ingredients.) Right at the end you could probably get away with a teeny bit of flaxseed oil or fish on the fries but not too much.

The NN is what DD is taking. She gags trying to chew them, and swallowing them has been hit or miss. DS just can't swallow them, but will take them mixed up with a spoonful of cake icing.:tongue_smilie: And I'm getting tired of cutting open these stinky fishy pills to mix them with stuff. I will try the gummy ones. This is getting expensive. LOL
RJH, the gummiesI linked to, I'm sorry to say, are vegetarian so they are probably ALA omega-3. I have not yet retained in my brain if this is as beneficial for spectrum kids as the EPA/DHA from fish oil and I suspect not, right? but the same brand, Hero, does have gummy DHA too which I noticed as we've been writing about these. lucky vitamin has those too at the best price I've found yet on the net. You can also get liquid, flavored fish oil from there. I haven't tried it but you wouldn't have to cut open the stinky little pills. The various things I try for ds and he can't take, I take. So I have some NSI brand "omega fishies" that are lemon flavored chewable gel caps. I just swallow them but they have been great when my tummy has been rejecting my usual omega-3 caps. some of the liquids here:

frosting, eh? I might have to try that w/ds!

I just bought the Omegabrite liquid less than a week ago and could tell a HUGE difference in my 3.5 year old the next day. I was not expecting such a big difference so soon. I was getting to the end up my rope with his tantrums and oppositional behavior and flat out rage at being told he can't do something. he is so agreeable now and even sits in time out when I tell him to. And he takes the liquid no problem.
Now I have not noticed a difference yet in my 9 yo. I know it can take a while so we'll see.
My 20 month old chews a couple of the gummies everyday. the gummies have always gone down well for them. They actually beg for them.
