Just curious. DH thinks daughter should learn this way so that keyboarding becomes more of a hand to page activity. She is 11 and has tracking, spelling, handwriting issues. What do you recommend?
Thanks

I'm a bit confused by this. I would teach her to type, then she won't need to look at her fingers, but I wouldn't cover the keys. That could drive anyone insane!

When I and dear hubby learned to type we did it by touch. We were told how to find home position but the keyboard did not have the letters on the keys so you could not cheat by looking down. now adays you can buy a keyboard cover which shows the outline of the key but not the name. You need to learn them by position. Is it still done this way?

You can also cut out a cardboard keyboard cover box. I think it is important to learn to touch type and not having the keys viewable should make it easier.

Our OT wanted ds, with similar issues, to do this. It drove him out of his mind. I stopped. He's progressing fine. I learned to type without any kind of program whatsoever, and my typing is basically touch typing. So it's possible to pick it up just from habit. What I think is important is fingering. I did work hard with ds on this.

My ds has been a touch typist since age 7. We never covered the keyboard. Both my husband and I are touch typist and never used a covered keyboard. It certainly isn't necessary to cover the keyboard to learn to type without looking at the keys.
