Or something else? I would like to use actual readers in addition to the "regular" books we have around the house and get from the library.

We used Pathway for 1st grade level and then switched to the Elson Readers. We both enjoyed the Pathway books, but I prefer the Elson books. In addition to stories/fables, they include some poetry, short plays, etc. Starting with the 3rd grade book comprehension questions/narration prompts are included in the book.

I have tried both of those and prefer Elson Readers. I found the Pathway readers to be a little too out there. The stories were mostly about life on the farm and how the boy helps his dad and the girl must help mom. I have 2 sons. I don't want them growing up thinking it isn't their job to help in the kitchen. ;)

The language in the McGuffey readers is rather difficult and might frustrate your child. It is a bit old fashioned. I am going by the original versions though. Perhaps the newer versions are different?
