We have used A Beka Math all the way through for many years and are perfectly happy with it for K-2. We do like the constant review they have up until 8th grade, but beginning in grade 3 there are too many problems, and the books are just way too long. With 7 kids at home I do not have time to figure out on a daily basis which problems each child should do each day. The high school books have taken my kids even longer to finish, so they are always behind. I have a teenager going into Algebra 1 and am considering the A Beka Video School as I do not have time to teach her, and she really needs to be taught and to be held accountable. The ones who have used it before were able to teach themselves mostly. None of them did that well on the math SAT, however, even though they all scored in the mid to upper 700's on the verbal SAT's. Is Abeka rigorous enough compared to Foerster's and Jacobs? I dislike the Saxon approach. Many years ago I rejected Jacobs even though I liked the books because they did not have Solutions Manuals. I really need them as I am not a math person. I am looking for a program that is rigorous and has Solutions Manuals. I am also looking for something that has those elements and that can be used by my two teenagers who are years behind in math. My 13 year old son has ADHD and needs to have new concepts explained at least 5 times to get them. This takes so long that there is little time to practice them, and then he forgets. I have taken to skipping a lot in his A Beka book, but what he really needs is a complete explanation of all of Arithmetic in one book, so he can start Algebra next year. Do Pre Algebra books give enough information and explanation for someone like him who as never learned many of the concepts? He is old enough to understand all of Arithmetic. He just learns very slowly. Thank you.
