This is our first year homeschooling - my daughter is in 2nd grade. We will be finishing 2nd grade math in the next 2 weeks and plan to begin the 3rd grade math program right away. I expect to be at least a third to a half way through the program by the time "summer vacation" comes. I am not planning to school through the summer, however I don't want to have to go back and review the math and lose ground on her progress. Has anyone successfully worked out a very low key schedule for the summer? We will be continuing with reading and attending various camps and enrichment activities. I was thinking about maybe working on a math lesson once a week. Would that be enough to keep us on track?

how about a math game everyday? After supper or something?

Look up "Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks." My kids have always enjoyed these activities--they don't feel anything like "school" yet they keep those skills sharp.

Just a thought.

Have you thought about working on math facts and like Alana said playing math games that incorporate what she has learned. This will keep her skills sharp, but won't seem so school-ish

I am in a similar situation to you... my dd7 will finish 2nd grade math in a month and we will continue on w/ 3rd. We follow a reduced schedule during the summer months. We do a sheet of math facts EVERY day, reading and Latin.

I like Paige's idea of focusing on math facts vs. curricula. That way she won't be faced with new concepts but will have a few months to really get the facts down pat.

Best of luck to you!!

You might have a lot of fun just sitting down and saying, "I thought I'd tell you a little about fractions today." And then just show her something cool.

My son loves it when I do this. No book. No plan. Just a hey...look what you can do.

Another thing you might try is to continue on in the 3rd grade book, but set a time limit of just 10 or 15 minutes per day. If it takes all week to finish a page, so what? You just want to keep your kiddo sharp, not break any speed records or anything. :)
