It's a baby girl, about 1 month old. I feel so out of it - what should I get her? We know the couple to the extent that my husband works with him (in different departments, though) and we see them at joint party type situations.

Can you get them a gift certificate for food delivery or something equivalent? I'm not too familiar with the US, but where I am there is a food chain that sells only frozen meals. Most of what the sell is relatively healthy and everything is just "throw in oven and heat." A friend of mine got a bunch of gift certs for this store from her hubby's co-workers and she thought they were the best gift ever! She could choose what to eat for supper, yet not have to cook... best of both worlds. :p

I like gifts like this myself b/c when you have a new baby so much attention goes to the new baby- cute clothes/toys/trinkets but everyone forgets about the tired Mommy!

You can't go wrong with a cute outfit, a pack of onesies, some baby blankets or towels, or those incredibly cute, one-piece stretchy, terry cloth sleepers that newborns are so adorable wearing. Sigh. Now I wish I had one! :)

You can come and look after mine in the middle of the night, if you'd like! I'll let you... :p

I just bought my dd a child-sized pearl necklace and bracelet for $14. Here's the link: http://www.strasburgchildren.com/smallpearlset.html They are SOOOO pretty and she gets all kinds of compliments when she wears them. They are going to be my gift of choice for baby girls from now on!

I'm about to have a baby girl - let's see...what would I like most?

As selfish as this may sound, something for ME.
A relaxing CD, bubble bath, nice! lotion (Bath and Body sells Medela I think it's called, great for preggo bellies) - something like that.

I hope she'll be getting plenty of babyish layette type stuff - a nice treat for mom or a homemade meal to freeze would be my preference.
How nice of you to shower her!

If it is a first baby, I always get some of my kids favorite board books along with some pjs for about 12-18 months. This has been very well-received in the past. And we love books here! It is so nice to share that love with others!

If they are well off, a unique gift, like the bracelet in a previous post is great. I love to give baby jewelry and it is always well received. A nice place to look is TJ Maxx if you have them in your area.

If they are of simpler means, a more practical gift is nice. An PJ outfit, but in a larger size, like 12-18mths is often a great place to start.

I made a gift basket for a dear friend once that contained items for the bath for mom and baby. I bought matching white hotel style robes, bath gels for both, candles, bath toys for baby and scrubbies for mom. Since it was for a good friend ... in the bottom of the basket I hid a nice nightie for mom that accentuated the bookshelfs and not the tummy area!) . It was a huge hit!

I second this! You've got to start that reading bug early!
