I'm putting together a co-op class for 7th graders that will only be one semester next fall. I've looked at several things and am wondering if you haev any resources that would be great or any I list below that you have an opinion about. I want this to be more project oriented than textbook driven and I am planning on focusing somewhat on the Periodic Table:
The Mystery of the Periodic Table (have students read along for 1 quarter) ?
The World of Chemistry by Tiner ~ I know it's more historical and will have to choose this or the one above.
Paradigm Integrated Physics and Chemistry ~ 3 of the 12 chapters are more chemistry focused, and I like the history/science intergration.
Elements: Ingredients of the universe ~ I really like her stuff but I'm afraid the cooking theme may be too "young" for the 7th graders. I do like the fact she is hand ons, etc.....though I haven't looked at any more of it than the short sample on her website.
RS4K ~ too technical for the group I have
Christian Kids learn about Chemisty (is that the right name) ~ I have this, and it's .... well... OK. I'm not thrilled with it, though it would give me some good handouts for certain subjects.
I really want to cover what would be in a Physical Science course in 8th grade for the Chem portion (and Chem is not covered in Apologia)....so, as you see, I'm kind of expanding the Physical Science course :) but I do want this to be fun, but solid learning.
I already use many of the www.sciencespot.com (http://www.sciencespot.com) chemistry activites which are very good.......but I guess I'm looking fora "spine" ~ and maybe something the kids can buy or I can copy as hand-outs.
Any ideas are welcome ~ Debbie
