Would this be too much?

I am planning on using Oak Meadow 3 next year for my third grader, and I noticed from the samples on their web site (http://www.oakmeadow.com/curriculum/overviews/3ov.pdf) that it includes some ancient history. My ds is in love with ancient history, so I was wondering if it would be too much to add in History Odyssey's Ancient Times, level 1?

I was also thinking that HO's Middle Ages and Early Modern Times would fit in nicely with my plans for 4th and 5th grades, plus since the kids would be using them together, it would put my dd right on track with history studies (she'll be first grade in the fall).

Also, anyone that has used Oak Meadow 3, how substantial was the science in it? I have science-loving kids, so I want to make sure it'll be enough. I tried asking this on the OM yahoo group but got nowhere. :(

We are using Oak Meadow 3 this year, so I'll try and reply. :)

For history it basically covers four civilizations, four times (every nine weeks)- Israelites, Phoenicians, Kush, Native Americans (different NA tribes in different lessons.) There are quite a few hands-on things and lots to do, but we don't do it all - I'm just not THAT project oriented. So I added ancient history as well. I added Galore Park Junior history 1 which is ancient history so HO ancients is probably fine as well - I've never used HO at the first level, so I can't really speak to that.

There is a lot of science if you want to do all of the suggested experiments and research and drawings, etc. We didn't do all of the science, just the things that interested us or the experiments that could be done with things from around the house. So I added in Real Science 4 Kids Biology.

I don't think it is necessary to add anything to Oak Meadow for a solid, well-rounded curriculum. But, if you don't plan to do everything in the book - it is a curriculum that is easy to tweak and add to as desired.

Thanks! It's good to know that other people tweak and supplement as much as I do. We have used RS4K pre-level biology and chemistry, and really enjoyed it - maybe we'll add in Level 1 biology again, but I think I'll just get ahold of the OM syllabus first (we get it through the charter school we use) and really look at it. I'm glad to know there's a lot of science!
