Does Miquon have to be done with the rods?

Can another manipulative be used, like the MUS blocks I already have, or something else?

I have the rods, but my son and I both prefer Unifix cubes, which may be more like what you have. For most of the Miquon activities, substituting was no problem at all. There are some pages that have grids for the rods. Another alternative that worked for us was to color those printed grids instead of covering them with rods.

Yes, Miquon only works to its fullest with the Cusinnaire rods, as Miquon activities use centimeters like the Cusinnaire rods, and I think MUS blocks use 1/2 inch increments. Your child would have a tough time completing the worksheets using rods other than Cusinnaire.
