As a family, we are reading The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. It is SO good--a well written, personal account of her experience hiding and helping Jews during WWII, and then her life in prison and concentration camp. It is so faith-filled, which also makes it quite inspiring. But as with all books, it is coming to an end and now I want our evening read-alouds to continue with something similarly wonderful. Do you have any suggestions? Not necessarily looking for autobiography or Christian, but those two have been a particular draw with this book.

Thank you!

I read Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis to my 7th/8th grade homeroom this fall, and they really enjoyed it. It's an easy read, but challenging language, if you get my drift. The chapters are short, the situations fraught with peril...lots of cliff-hangers. :)

I'd recommend The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp - the story that inspired The Sound of Music. True story, inspiring, dramatic, Christian,... we all loved it here!

Shadow of His Wings: The True Story of Father Gereon Goldman, Roman Catholic Priest and "Spy for God". It's a book on CD available from St. Joseph Communications.

This is the story of Fr. Goldman, a German, who was drafted into the German army during WWII. He is put into the SS and then travels with various units around the fronts of the war. He is ordained during this ordeal and eventually captured and sent to a prison camp in North Africa. It's a great story and he definitely leans on his faith quite a bit during his travels.

Hey Lynne,

Here have been three of our recent favorites:

Hinds Feet on High Places
Bruchko
God's Smuggler

All 3 are Christian. The first is an allegory, much like Pilgrim's Progress but a bit more contemporary; there's a children's version with pictures that I've let my 4-yo look at while I read.

Bruchko and God's Smuggler are missionary biographies. Both are excellent and deal with men who are completely committed to God. They are truly faith building.

Those three come to mind first, but I'll get my list out tonight. I'm sending dh, and ds1 and 2 off on a mission trip to Haiti this evening, so just taking a minute to goof off and check in. :001_smile:

HTH,
Lisa

Thank you for these suggestions...and any more to come! I am thrilled to discover we have both God's Smuggler and The Shadow of His Wings on our shelves...yea!!! Now when we finish The Hiding Place (only one more chapter) we'll be able to begin another exciting story right away. I really appreciate your titles!

That Quail, Robert (Stanger) is a delightful true account of a retired couple and a quail they raised.

Tramp for the Lord is even better than The Hiding Place. If you still want more Corrie ten Boom, go for In My Father's House.

I'll second The Story of the Trapp Family Singers as well. Also check Sonlight for great read-alouds.
