Are We Using Singapore Right???

My dd who is in 3rd grade started Singapore 2B in Jan. and will finish it next week. I don't consider her a math whiz or anything. I did think it would take her longer. I don't mind that she is almost done, but I want to make sure we are using Singapore correctly:glare: .

We did double up on some Ex. because she would complete a lesson quickly. She doesn't miss too many problems on the review.

Should I have her move onto 3A or do one of the extra workbooks?

I just want to make sure she is learning the "Singapore" way because from what I have heard, it would be difficult in future books if she is not.

Also, at what age do you let your dc read the textbook on their own?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Get the IP and/or CWP workbooks. They will round out the Singapore approach and present much more challenging problems.

My dd is the same way. Only she did 1A/B for 2nd grade. We tried 1/2 of BJU 3 and decided to go back to Singapore. I did have her start with 2A, so there wouldn't be any gaps.

Right now, she's doing 45-60 minutes of work daily. Usually she gets 2-3 exercises done. She's not doing any of the supplement books. I'm afraid it would overload her, she absolutely HATED the Intensive Practice book.

I know... get the Extra Practice (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=193744&netp_id=514880&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=covers), if you think she needs more before going into 3A. I did use that for level 1 and she liked it. Everything was still on the same level, not too hard.

We have always used the Challenging Word Problems and Intensive Practice books for each level. We work through them concurrently with the topics as they are covered in the normal workbook and textbook. I had my daughter read the textbook on her own around level 3A, I think....my memory is fuzzy. If she has trouble with something she is supposed to come to me for more help and I'll do example problems for her from the Instructor's Guide. We never finish the CWP and IP books though. We dabble in them. We always complete the textbook Practices/Reviews and the workbooks of course. I have no idea if we are doing it the way we are supposed to or not. :001_smile:

My dd worked through 2 a & B quickly. Thanks to advice on this board, I added the IP and CWP. It really expanded things.

Now she is in 3A and having no problems because a few things she already ventured into in the CWP and IP of level 2. I will not leave out IP and CWP again. :001_smile: We are so happy with them.

... we have used Singapore from level 3 through secondary. The CWP and IP are indispensible IMO. We use IP concurrently with the text, and CWP about 1/2 year behind, which conveniently serves as a review as well as word problems practice. :)
