The circles by our name...some are grey and some are green Why?

I am having a hard time figuring out why my circle is green and some are grey. Does this have to do with number of post? or thread starters?

They are green when the person is currently online, on the forums. Grey means that they are not currently logged in.

I believe Green indicates that you are logged in visibly, so others can see you are here. Next to my name ought to be a red circle, as I lurk invisibly. :p

But can others see your red circle? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of being invisible? I'm thinking the red circle can only be seen by you to let you know that you are invisible. Maybe?
