View Full Version : Other than ETC, are there any "fun" workbooks to go along with Phonics Pathways

Workbooks that don't use "word families". We are having great success with Phonics Pathways but they really enjoy doing workbook pages~especially the cutting & pasting type. :001_smile:

It's not really a workbook, but my boys have enjoyed Phonics Fold Ups (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=111590&kw=111590&en=froogle&p=1013824&cm_mmc=CBDfeeds-_-froogle-_-books-_-111590). It's a reproducable book. Each page has a phonics sound and activities relating to that sound. The child folds the paper so they have a little "book" at the end.
Another good phonics workbook is Plaid Phonics (http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Curriculum-Press-Plaid-Phonics/dp/0765226200/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237643656&sr=8-2).

We used MCP's plaid phonics books. They are colorful and the exercises are similar to ETC. The only problem is trying to find the exercises that correspond to what you are teaching. We used the Ordinary Parents' Guide so we had to search for the relevant material, but we had to do that with ETC too.

Are there any sample pages for MCP Plaid Phonics? I have tried to find some but no luck. All I can see is the outside of the book. :001_huh:

CBD (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=601215&netp_id=222004&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=covers) has some sample pages, though not of all levels.
Rainbow Resource also has a few in the 1998 (http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1237689574-1000896&subject=5&category=830) and 2003 (http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1237689574-1000896&subject=5&category=831) editions.
I haven't used them, but I'm trying to choose workbooks too:)

I have a fun game that is a nice supplement to any phonics program:

It is fun, my older remedial students enjoy it as well. My adult students also like the break from normal work, but it's most fun for up to 6th grade, the elementary age seems to really enjoy it. The elementary age siblings of my remedial students also enjoy playing the game, even good readers have fun playing.

Same here. The Plaid Phonics K is pre-Pre-ETC, to me. For a 4 year old. A I used at age 5 (as well as pre-ETC) and we are into C, now, halfway through 1st grade, while doing ETC 3 (and Phonics Pathways and SWR 3 days a week...because if I just use one method, we click right through it so fast, we quickly get in over his head).
I found the older plaid cover ones harder to get. I think they are being replaced and I didn't like the graphics as well in the news ones. I found B used on Amazon.

If you go to the Plaid books K or C etc, you get a panel that has the "people who bought this book also bought". It turned up there. I tried searching for Plaid Phonics B and didn't get it that way. I think it was a fluke (one seller at that moment). The bookstore near me said they were discontinued, and indeed I used to see that cover everywhere, but now I see the new one (I go in to teacher's stores whenever I spot one....they seem to be in strip malls).
I'm an old fuddy-duddy, and I'd rather stick to something older than newer unless I have a clear reason to make the switch.
