I gave my son the MWIA. I think I did the scoring correctly. We'll see...
Holistic - I
Time: 40 seconds
Errors: 0
WPM: 75
Phonetic - I
Time: 55 seconds
Errors: 8
Spell-Cor: 7/8
Phon Eff: 87.5%
Slow-Down: 27%
Holistic - II
Time: 225 seconds
Errors: 19
WPM: 56
Phonic Eff: 89.4%
Phonetic - II
Time: 398 seconds
Errors: 55
Spell-Cor: 30/55
Phon Eff: 55%
Slow-down: 43%
I think that's right. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Michele

I think you were on ElizabethB's website, so she's who you need to help you interpret the scores. I had to google to find out what the MWIA is. :001_smile:

I may be in NC someday, that would be even more confusing! Right now we're in Arkansas, but we're moving to Santa Monica for a year this summer. After that, NC is a possibility, although DC or Arkansas is more likely.
Those scores are very similar to what most of my remedial students score. And, most of them improve fairly quickly! I had one student who was reading above grade level after only 6 hours of remedial work: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/johnnysjournal.html
However, most of my students take 12 to 30 hours of work before they are at grade level, and a lot of review beyond that before they are fluent readers.
The slow down and the fact that he can read most of the phonetic words correctly when he spells them shows that he knows phonics, but it is not automated. I would suggest a program that uses very few sentences or stories, he needs to over-learn the phonics basics until they are automated. Nonsense words and words taught in isolation help automate the phonics skills.
The information I gave to Razorbackmama should also be helpful for you, this thread from page 6 on (there's some interesting info at the beginning, too, but from page 6 on is most helpful): http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80680&highlight=phonics+bane+existence&page=6
You can teach nonsense words either through James William's "We All Can Read" http://weallcanread.com/3-Adult-Product-1.html or my game: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html
Good programs for an older child or adult are the above mentioned book, my current favorite--Webster's Speller, Blend Phonics (free at Donpotter.net, http://www.donpotter.net/education_pages/blend_phonics.html), and my online phonics and spelling lessons. Back on the Right Track Reading Lessons are also good for an older student, they have samples online:

What is MWIA?

MWIA is the Miller Word Identification Assessment. The MWIA is a diagnostic test that measures the reading speed and accuracy of 2 different sets of words--sight words and phonetically regular words that are not commonly taught as sight words. Students that read the phonetic words slower than the sight words or miss more phonetic words than sight (holistic) words often have symptoms of dyslexia induced by sight words, the MWIA can help determine if dyslexia is sight word induced or organic. The test is available from donpotter.net, I also have a link to the test with some other diagnostic reading tests here: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/readinggradeleve.html
