My children and I are having a discussion, right now, while eating our twice baked potatoes.

We are having a great American room swap and some new mattresses have been acquired. My 12 year old will be moving into his own room for the first time in his entire life and his new bed is full size.

This has led to a discussion about bed sizes. I pointed out that his new bed would be big, but not as big as his sisters' bed (queen size) which is not as big as dh's and my bed ( king size). So Justice asked "Hey, what size is my bed?" and I said "Twin" which led to a big discussion about why a little bed is a twin and a bigger bed is a full size.

Does anyone know why? The kids and I want to know. We wait breathlessly for the answer.

I always assumed that they were called twin beds because they were sold in pairs and looked liked twins.

A twin is exactly half of a King. 2 of them (twins) =King.
A Full size is what was made for a "married" couple. It is full size, big enough for two. Of course, it has now been replaced by the Queen bed.
You can google bed sizes. I did this when I wanted to find the right size to buy my boys' beds when they outgrew their reg. twin beds.

What gets really fun, is when you order custom beds. My sons are really tall. So, I just bought one a Full, X- Long, which makes it same length as a queen, but width of a full. Try to find sheets for that one!

We have a full, but I've always called it a double. Made things confusing for my husband when he was buying a new set of sheets. He couldn't find a single set for our 'double' bed.

Okay, 2 twins=king, that makes sense.

Thanks everyone. Anyone want to come help move furniture from room to room with me?

MAN!~! I'm wiped. Got any Mikes handy? :D

FWIW, I also believe "twin" beds are referred to as "singles" when there's only one.

In this house right now we have crib/toddler, twin bunks, full, queen, and a cal king. We used to have a "super single?" water bed and a queen water bed. My sheet shelf needed its own cataloging system.
