So I finally decided to switch over to compact fluorescents now that they have come down in price enough that we can afford to buy them. I picked up a couple of packs at Walmart; I think it was about $6-8 for 4 bulbs. But I've noticed that they buzz. I am very sensitive to noise pollution, especially a repetitious or steady noise, and the buzzing in my living room is starting to drive me nuts! I guess I'd be willing to purchase a more expensive brand if they didn't buzz, but I'm not willing to shell out the money if they all do it (or to find out).

Can someone tell me if all compact fluorescents buzz, or just the cheapo Walmart brand?

TIA!

Ours have never buzzed. We bought ours from Lowes and Home Depot...they are a name-brand (but I forget which).

Hmm
I've not noticed ours buzzing either. The only buzzing lights we have here are the ones on the ceiling fan in our room, on a dimmer. If not turned on fully they will buzz. And I agree...VERY annoying. But those are just regular light bulbs.
hmm interesting
Oh, ours are the WalMart ones as well.

Ours don't buzz - we bought most of them at Home Depot. I don't think you are supposed to use them in light fixtures that have a dimmer switch - maybe that would cause a buzzing noise?

We tried installing a dimmer switch in a fixture that already had flourescents and the switch wouldn't even work. -didn't read the fine print beforehand-

Yes, they can buzz. It bothers me to. We've purchased GE and Philliips. They just never seem to be bright enough for me. Just remember that it's illegal in seven states to dump mercury laden fluorescent bulbs in with regular trash.
