View Full Version : Help me list science/engineering project resources...

Can we start a thread about real science resources? I'm gathering ideas for my son's high school. I'll probably dump him into CC classes for science, but I need ideas for science/engineering projects. The recent thread about testing helped me to see that if we're not going to go the testing route, we really, really have to properly do the project route.

(That means I have to find a way to free up the time, which since we're doing two languages AND peacewalking AND great books AND gymnastics AND putting family first which means sending him to help his grandfather an afternoon a week AND trying to do math well which takes us forever and forever is going to be a large problem. Guess this is my own how-do-I-make-it-all-fit wail.)

Some things that have been mentioned here before:

Backyard Ballistics
(Has anyone seen this? How much physics is included?)

Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments
(Thread discussing it http://forums.homechemlab.com/ )

Lego Robotix

Make magazine and kits

Ham radio license

And what was that tracking program someone used for biology?

There's JETS teams and competitions: http://www.jets.org/

I found lots of other competitions by googling high school engineer competitions.

Hey Nan,

We did this before (and you even contributed!)

Check out this thread (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82163&highlight=science).

I am truly a bear of very little brain. I'll type this all into the other thread so it is all in one place. One place IS a good idea... if remembered...

Which is why tags are great! They'll remember for us.

Ah yes! So far I've been ignoring such newfangled things.

I have Backyard ballistics, though we didn't use it as much as I meant to. It has stuff to build that a boy would like and does explain the physics behind it. I think it would be fun, and a great supplement to a physics lab science. One place to visit for some great ideas is:

The site has some great books and hands on ideas for science.
