Nud&ty in Usborne Book of World History

I just started Sonlight Yr 1 with ds5 and we are loving it. I finally received the Usborne Book of World History from Amazon today and was surprised to find so much nudity in a book geared for young children (yup, even pubic hair:eek:). Eldest son used the Usborne Encyclopedia for his world history studies and there is no nudity in that. Was anyone else startled or disturbed to find so much of it in this book?

If you read the Sonlight boards, folks use a black sharpie to make underwear, stickers, or leave the people "natural." Sonlight takes a lot of flack for some of their book choices (to the point of getting banned from some Christian homeschool conferences), so it's something to keep in mind if you plan to continue to use their materials.

We're on our sixth core, and I always pre-read everything. We took the Usborne book "natural" with some explanation of cource, but I've dropped a few missionary books that I felt were too gritty for our tastes.

This is why I picked the Kingfisher Encyclopedia over the Usborne, but I was not using Sonlight.

Never got much attention here beyond the occasional giggle (from my dd). I'm using it with Core 1+2 and honestly, I feel we could do just as well without it. A Child's History of the World really is enough. Nonetheless, it does not bother me. It's not even realistic nudity. Not at all like you'd see in some museums for instance...

One could always use this site ( http://www.kidspast.com/ ) for a way to add a little more info and pictures (which to me seems to be the purpose of the Usborne book). I haven't looked through the whole site so there may be some nudity there as well. I haven't seen any yet. It seems very well done.

We're German so... no problem with nudity here. As long as it's not truly pornographic it doesn't bother us. I guess Germans take a different approach in general: our children have seen so much nudity that they don't even notice it or find it particularly interesting. The whole titillation-factor is missing.

That reminds me of my male American friend walking with me along the bike trail in Heidelberg in the summer a few years ago. There were a bunch of female college students sunbathing topless and nobody even noticed or looked at them. Except for my friend whose eyes were about to pop out of his head. He couldn't believe that all of these German guys were just walking by nonchalantly while these young, pretty girls were lying naked on the grass. But I pointed out that the girls where there every day so it gets old after a while. He thought we were all crazy. :001_huh: Then he noticed that the guys were staring at ME and trying to catch my eye. I was the only dark-skinned girl in a 5-mile radius.

It's whatever you're used to, I guess. In Maryland black women are a dime-a-dozen but if a girl took off her shirt the guys would probably pass out on the spot. And then she'd be arrested. LOL! Reminds me of my German DH's reaction to hearing about those stupid "Girls Gone Wild" videos. He just looked at me blankly and said, "What's the point of that?"

But we Germans have the amazing talent to make ANYTHING boring.

Honestly, unless the pictures are pornographic I see no big deal. We all have these parts. We have all seen them I assume. If the pictures are supposed to depict realistic scenes and at that time they didn't wear clothing, it would really silly and inaccurate to put clothing on them.

This was one of the first books I bought for homeschooling, so I've had it for 5 years or so. I guess I'm not that observant because I never noticed. It's not my favorite book, though, so I haven't spent too much time with it.

We must be German! Well, actually, my grandmother's mother was a German immigrant, but I don't think this explains my family's attitude about nudity. We're not nudists or anything, but it really is a non-issue around here. Oh, and we're pretty boring!
