I am freaking out! I know I am. I contemplated doing this last year, and wimped out. I am most likely going to make the switch this year, because of the cost difference. Someone whose taken the leap, please tell me we'll be fine. We love Abeka, but I just can't afford them. We are going on 4th grade this year and are having to buy new since they are revising every year as we hit it. I looked at R&S as recommended in TWTM. I have their samples and they look good, but I have been an Abeka snob, and like their presentation.

I also have this little itty bitty problem of reading the great book, "100 Top Picks by Cathy Duffy." It said that R&S is great for workbook types, like my daughter, but doesn't work well with other types of learning styles. This scares me too! What should I do?

Indecisive, Jen

Oops! I didn't read over my title! I have better grammar skills than that!

I am going from Abeka to R&S! Is the message I was trying to convey!

I use Rod and Staff with an auditory kid and one who is more visual. It works for both of them. My kid who loves workbooks isn't doing formal grammar at the moment so I don't know about the comment.

We use R&S for grammar, and I think it is great! I don't know why Cathy Duffy would recommend it only for workbook types because it is possible to do nearly all of it orally. We do! There is a separate booklet that has worksheets for some lessons. We use those sometimes. Anyway, I think you will like it! And if not, you can resale it. :)

I love Cathy, but I don't always agree with her.:)

You can't go wrong with R&S's Building Christian English series.

My dd isn't a workbook type, but we use R&S for Reading and English. English we do a lot orally. She's actually a hands-on kid, but we use a variety of styles, depending on the subject. If we did hands on all day, we'd never finish. So take into consideration if your kid isn't a workbook kid, that variety is really the spice of life!
