I've been thinking about trying a unit of TOG to see if I like it. I want an entire unit and not the 3 week trial so I can get a real feel for the curriculum.
I was going to try Y1 U3 because I have a few of the books already.
My question is: Do I need TOG's Writing Aids or can I use FLL and WWE since I already have them? My dc are 9 and 6. I want to use whatever covers the basics quickly, easily and with the least amount of pain ;)
Thanks!

You don't need Writing Aids to use TOG. You can use their writing assignments that are included in the unit but use a different writing curriculum for the actual instruction or you can disregard the writing assignments all together. In the spirit of keeping things simple, I have chosen to go with Writing Aids when I went back to TOG. I am not a writing expert by any means but as far as I can tell, WA is thorough, straight forward and easy to teach. I also like that it covers 1st through 12th since I have a variety of ages. I love that I can use it next year with my 1st grader and 7th grader. The longer we HS, the more I have tried to keep things simple.

You do not need to use Writing Aids. It is an extra portion of TOG. Much of what is included might be on the Loom and the instructions are already in your Unit. You could probably try some of the exercises without purchasing the book immediately. I also found that IEW corresponds nicely with TOG. Not perfectly but very nicely.

I probably need to start using TOG before I decide.

I haven't started TOG yet but I am planning on using FLL since we are already partways through it. I'm debating whether to continue with WWE or use Writing Aids... I'm thinking that I'll probably go with WWE but not use the workbook. I'll just have dd do the types of exercises that WWE suggests (copywork, narration, dictation) but tailor it so that it corresponds to her TOG topics.
