What are some of your favorite, can't miss, resources and books for studying the human body? I really like books that have simple activities or projects that correlate with the topic, and of course, great pictures. I don't want a curriculum, just books that I can likely find at my library. Our libraries are great and have lots of books to choice from - almost too many (and too many library locations) to browse them all. I was hoping you could narrow down my search a bit.
Thanks,
Gwen

We've enjoyed the Usborne First Encyclopedias...

Usborne You and Your Body (from sonlight core 1). Gross Anatomy (has board games after you read the info) and I started taping Magic School Bus on the DVR. MSB Goes Cellular, MSB Human Body, MSB Digestion are the best!
Then there are links: Cells Are Us (http://www.icnet.uk/kids/cellsrus/cellsrus.html)

I really like the Kingfisher's Human Body Encyclopedia, KF's Young Discoverers Series The Human Body, DK EyeWitness Series Human Body and the excellent series Let's-Read-and-find-out-science. These and a few more readers (like Step Into Reading's Bones) on the subject are going to be our program for next year :)
Oh, and don't forget Nova Human Body videos as well as a few online ideas for good measure.

We are studying the human body right now and I've been using the Usborne First Ency plus a human body book by Seymour Simon and Janice VanCleave's Human Body for Every Kid.
Using the library has been great for us, but it requires some work from me. Each week I browse the library online to find books for our weekly topic and then I'll check amazon for more details about the books we have in circulation. From doing this all year, there are some author's names I recognize and know we'll want their book (Seymour Simon, Paul Showers, etc.). The process really doesn't take all that long and I know I'll be able to pick up a good 5 books on our topic.

We are starting our human body study in a couple of weeks. I'll have a 1st, 3rd, and 7th grade. Some books we are using are My Body (http://www.amazon.com/Body-Science-Books-PATTY-CARRATELLO/dp/1557342113/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237117071&sr=8-1), Head to Toe Science (http://www.amazon.com/Head-Toe-Science-Spine-Tingling-Heart-Pounding/dp/0471332038/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237117177&sr=1-1), and Easy Make and Lean projects: the Human body. (http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Make-Learn-Projects-Grades/dp/0439040876/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237117177&sr=1-2), plus a lot of MSB books and videos. I even got the MSB science kits for the human body and germs. We are going to have so much fun!:)

I second My Body, by Teacher Created Press. It's easily ordered and not expensive. It's a great way to tie together the things you will learn in the other recommended books. You end up with an outline body on the wall--dc lies down on a big piece of paper, you trace around and cut out, then each lesson consists of coloring and cutting out an internal body part which is attached to the outline. You could do one or two systems or organs a week, coordinating with experiments for each. I like Jan Van Cleave's book for the experiments.

The hits here have been DK's Eye Wonder Human Body, Usborne's Little Encyclopedia of the Human Body, and The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body. There is also a Magic School Bus dvd with three episodes on the body -- one each on digestion, muscles, and the ummune system. DD really enjoyed that one, and memorized the digestive sytem from watching it.

I haven't read the other responses but wanted to mention (as it's not typcially considered "academic"), the Magic School Bus DVDs are great for the human body. Inside Ralphie is a fantastic resource for the digestive system. There are others too, but the titles are escaping me.

We are just finishing Evan Moor's Scienceworks for Kids book titled, Learning About My Body. My 6 year old has had fun and learned a lot from it. It covers things like external parts, internal parts, skeleton, muscles, heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, brain, the five senses, growth of humans, nutrition, rest, cleanliness, exercise, and safetly. It gives suggestions of library books to read and teacher notes to go along with lessons and activities provided in their boook. You do have to have access to a photocopy machine, as the set up of the book requires you to copy many of the pages for your student to use. Samples can be see at the Evan Moor website.
FWIW, we also just finished the "weather" book which was very good too.

Head to Toe Science by Jim Wiese combined with My Body by Teacher Created Resources (building a paper body same size as your child), with Human Body (Easy to Create) by Donald Silver activity book. We did this earlier this year and had a blast! I wish I would have used Head to Toe for first grade, which is why we revisited the Human Body this year for 3rd.

Here's what I did last time around for first grade:
We used DK's My First Body Book as a spine. Any good human body encyclopedia could be used, though, such as Kingfisher, Usborne, etc. We added in these books to the spreads as we read through the book:
Let's Explore: Me and My Body (DK)
Why Do We Laugh? Questions About the Human Body (DK)
Let's Explore Sound and Music (DK)
Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body
I Know Why I Brush My Teeth
Hooray for Teeth!
I Know How We Fight Germs
A Book About Your Skeleton
Look Inside Your Brain
Stop, Look and Listen: Using Your Senses From Head to Toe
Magic School Bus Explores the Senses
Why Boys and Girls are Different
Where Do Babies Come From?
Me and My Amazing Body
The Human Body Riddle Book (easy)
(These are books I had at home, so if you need authors, I may still own some of these and can check that for you.)
Library books:
Look at Faces, Henry Pluckrose
Faces, Shelley Rotner
Skin, Teeth and Hair, Anna Sandeman
Your Skin Holds You In, Helen Doss
All About Your Skin, Hair and Teeth, Donna Bailey

When you learn the bones, buy some of those bathtub crayons, put your child in his/her swimsuit, and write the names of the bones on them! Ds loved this, though it is tricky if they are ticklish. We did it one night before bath time.
