View Full Version : Would algebra I be the next step for ds who'll finish Horizons & Singapore in 7th gr?

My dd has moved slowly through math. No matter which program she's doing, math just takes her a long time to complete each day. She rarely misses anything in Horizons and struggles with Singapore. Obviously, her first choice is Horizons because it comes easily. However, I keep her in Singapore because of the discipline it requires to make her apply math. So, we probably won't finish Horizons 6 or SM 6B until mid or end of 7th.
Will these 2 programs prepare her for Algebra I in 8th or should we consider a yr of pre-algebra? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jennifer

All of my sons have moved directly into algebra 1 after Singapore 6B. However if your daughter struggles, she might benefit from a summer pre-algebra program. I would hesitate having her do a full year of pre-algebra after Singapore. You could check out Life Of Fred's pre-algebra program. I think it could be done in the summer before 8th grade very easily.

Cynthia,
Thank you for the tip on Fred's. You clarified what I thought, which is that it would be too redundant to go through a full year of pre-algebra. Since she moves more slowly in math, I think I'd rather start algebra in 8th and just take a slower pace through algebra I, geometry, and algebra II. Even if it takes us into 11th gr that would still give us one more year for a possible trig/pre-calc class.
Thanks,
Jennifer
