I would love some suggestions for a read aloud book about WWII. My boys are 9 to 14 yo. They still love read alouds.
Thanks, Heidi

My DS is 11.5, and loves learning about WW2. Some others we enjoyed:
House of Sixty Fathers
Number the Stars
Little Riders
Code Talker

Some of the things we've just been reading for WWII (I have a 9 year old, too):
My Friend, the Enemy, J. B. Cheaney
Number the Stars, Lois Lowry
Also good were Auschwitz, the story of a Nazi death camp; and Hiroshima, the story of the first atom bomb, both by Clive Lawton
Son has read himself:
Toro! Toro! Michael Morpugo
Anne Frank: A Life in Hiding, Johanna Hurwitz
Usborne Famous Lives: Adolf Hitler, Katie Daynes
Twenty and Ten, Claire Bishop
Hiroshima, Laurence Yep
Mieko and the Fifth Treasure, Eleanor Coerr
Hitler's Daughter, Jackie French
The Gadget
Memories of Survival, Esther Krinitz, et al
We've liked all these,
Regena

FOr the Pacific conflict, I recommend Year of Impossible Goodbyes.

These are great! I had forgotten about Snow Treasure. It was one of my favorites as a kid... I can't wait to look at all the others. I really appreciate your suggestions!

Nothing to Fear by Koller. This one is not WWII, but about The Great Depression. It was a good one though! Whenever I think about that time period (1930's-40's) I fondly remember reading this aloud to my boys; they thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not really what you were looking for, but thought I'd mention it just in case. :D

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
The author was a journalist, as I recall, and it reads like a huge string of articles, but more cohesive. The language is not high-flalutin in any way and you get a feeling of how the people back home got the news, a day at a time. This really fleshed out the war for me. I read it while I walked to and from school (although back then I walked everywhere and read all kinds of books while I walked...often singing at the same time!).

There is actually a children's condensed version by Shirer. It is a Landmark book.

Escape from Warsaw (http://www.amazon.com/Escape-Warsaw-Original-title-Silver/dp/0590437151/)(Original title: The Silver Sword).
This was very good and the main characters are all children. We loved it.
