I just finished Thomas Paine- common sense and I just started reading "Founding faith". I'm looking for more first-hand accounts, or well-written biographies, besides the ones off the top of my head- constitution/ doi , ben f. autobiography. I'm interested in anything that's not "dry". Thanks :)

I loved John Adams by McCullough and I've heard 1776 is wonderful. What about the Federalist Papers? I don't think they're dry at all, but then again, don't try reading them in bed!

I third the above suggestions.:D I am in the middle of John Adams and loved 1776.

I have watched part of the HBO series (our DVD player died before I finished). So far I have really enjoyed it.

Have you looked at the list on Ambleside Online (Year 9 covers the founding of the US)? Founding Brothers, for example, was very good, as was Miracle at Philadelphia.
