For those of you that answered my other thread about what you use to supplement Singapore... first off, thank you! The hive has been so helpful and full of insight! I am so appreciative! :001_smile:
My question... when you use Intensive Practice for Singapore, am I correct in understanding you should use the same level you are working in? It appears to broken down in topics as the text and workbooks. Do you do one per day?
Also the Challenging Word Problems... do you have ds do these daily as well??? They do not seem to be broken down the same, and I have heard you should use one level behind. If you are in 3A, then use 2B CWP. May I ask why this is? I know they are known to be really challenging... so why not use the same level? Or is it best to 'master' what they are currently on through lessons and wkbks along with intense practice, and the CWP act as review, but more in depth of concepts they have already learned??? That kind of makes more sense now that I type this out. Anyway, thank you ahead for any input or suggestions you may have? :bigear:

They are intended to be used at the same level, at least I always thought so. I use CWP at the same grade level, I just start the CWP AFTER we do the corresponding chapter although, I do know many use a level behind. I only used the IP series for my oldest and she did fine with them (she has completed Singapore Earlybird-6B and part of NEM 1), I would never even try them with my ds, it would frustrate him who is currently in 3B.

We go through the regular textbook and workbook fairly quickly. Once a topic in the WB is completed, then we start it in IP. Our daily routine is one exercise of WB, one page of IP-Monday through Thurs and then on Fri we do CWP. We do CWP about a 1/2 a book behind, ie start CWP 3 after WB 3A is completed. Fri only consists of a page or two, depending on the complexity of the problems.
We tend to finish the WB early and once the entire level is done, we do just IP on that level Mon-Thurs, usually a 1-3 pages, depending on the number of problems on the page until the level is completed.
In a nutshell, this keeps the program somewhat spiral without the daily monotony of a spiral program. IP goes more in depth on the topic and provides the extra practice when needed without being so repititious that the child is bored. CWP just completely challenges the mind most days-even for the math-loving mom :D
I just started using the IP and CWP this year. I have been doing the IP separately from the SM textbook/workbook. DD finished all of 4A and 4B and then started through the IP and CWP. I was planning to use them together, but this is working well for us. I think that if I used IP and the workbook together, dd would get bored with a topic pretty quickly. I've heard that you should use CWP a year behind, but that may be only if your dc has difficulty with word problems. My dd is flying through it; in fact, she thinks that the IP is more difficult.
If I had a student that does not need as much repetition or review, I would do only the IP and CWP and not the regular workbook.

We do the whole chapter with just the textbook and workbook. Then we do the whole chapter of IP that corresponds to the textbook chapter, then we do the whole chapter of Challenging Word Problems that corresponds to the textbook. The only things I do out of order are the reviews in the textbook and workbook. There will often be two or three reviews in a row. We spread these out, usually doing one when we need a break from IP. It usually takes us over a week to work through the IP chapter and these are, by far, the most intense days. But, it is my favorite of the Singapore books. :)

We also do the text and regular workbook exercises first, then do the IP pages relating to the the same topic/chapter. However, if it seems like my dc really "get" a topic after going over the text together, I sometimes have dc only do the even or odd numbered problems in the regular text, and then proceed more quickly to the IP. The problems in the IP are simply excellent.
We also usually omit the word problems in the IP (unless the problems appear have a little "something" the CWP doesn't), and then just do the CWP word problems for the same topic. The CWP will not have word problems for every topic in the workbooks, so sometimes you won't have to do the CWP.
We use the IP and CWP on the same level as the workbooks, and we also find the IP to be more challenging than the CWP. On the other hand, they compliment each other so well, I can't imagine doing without one or the other.

Yes, we use the same level. No we don't do it daily. We complete the entire section in the textbook and workbook first, then go through the corresponding section in the IP.

Yes, we're doing one or two problems a day.

We use ours on level for the most part. For my fourth grader this year, she started with the end review section of CWP 3 (she had completed all of the previous sections last year). At the same time she began working in the 4A text and workbook. Once she completed CWP 3 (took a month or so I think), she moved on to CWP 4. This has her working a section or so behind in CWP and seems to be working very well.
