View Full Version : Math Suggestions for a 6 yo boy--no MUS or Saxon, please

can't use MUS or Saxon--he passed up an older sibling using MUS who really struggles and was completely flabbergasted that he would pass her up and she ended up tormenting him off school hours saying he couldn't do it because he was younger... she's my ADHDer and hey, I'm picking my battles and this isn't going to be one of them. So we moved him from MUS Alpha to R&S grade 1 Math for the remainder of the year.

My oldest is doing Saxon 5/4 and that's the earliest grade that offers a DVD teacher....

I looked at Horizons Math but I was unsure where to place him. The first book of Math 2 looks like what he's doing now, but the 2nd book of Math 2 looks waay advanced.

The first book of Horizons Math 1 looks waay to easy and again the 2nd book looks like the R&S he's working on now.

R&S -- dh doesn't like it. And as he's a former elementary math teacher I'm kinda outta my league in arguing with him here. He loves Saxon, but agrees that it's not a choice for earlier grades.

Is Singapore an option?

It is spiral in a workbook format. Many are switching up to CLE and are raving about it.

I'm really considering it. You can see pics if you join the yahoo group.

I switched my son to BJU and he loves it - much better than MUS and R&S. Yeah, we did both as well. :tongue_smilie:

RightStart is my absolute favorite but others to consider are

Math Mammoth

Are we starting too late, you think? I keep hearing how you have to start with this or you'll end up scrambling to figure out placement

Another vote for Right Start. it's not necessarily grade specific, goes by letters for the levels..A,B,C, etc. We just finished C with my 9yo and I feel that she is sufficiently ahead of her peers as far as math concepts goes...she can spout off math facts easily (for the most part and when she want to!) I'm pleased with the results, even tho she drags her feet and some areas were a real struggle for her. can't wait to get my level D!

I also just purchased the Math Mammoth downloads and really like what I see. I planned to use them to supplement RS, but now that I have them, I'm tempted to use them for my 7yo whose attention span isn't the greatest.

I've used all three, MUS, SM and RightStart. I think RS is the strongest, based on how much DD is learning without her realizing it.

I used a combo of Shiller and A Beka for my boys. :) I loved A Beka but incorporating the Shiller a few times a week to go along with A Beka kept them from always having to just 'do the worksheet'.

We really liked Singapore Math for grades K-5, especially for a strong math student. The workbooks are very inexpensive, and it develops solid mental math and problem solving skills.

Not at all. We started our older son in 4rd grade with Singapore after he finished Miquon. Worked great and he loved both programs.

:iagree:And, I think there is a placement test out there... at sonlight site or maybe at the singapore site. Sorry I can't give a link!

No, but being that he's 6 I'd go ahead and start with 1A. You could just get the workbook and let him go.

There is a placement test... you can find it at Sonlight or CBD.

My dd worked on 1A & 1B her 2nd grade year. I then switched her to BJU 3... we're now back in Singapore for the remainder of her 3rd grade year. She's starting where we left off, 2A, and she's flying through most of it, but I wanted to make sure there weren't any gaps. I expect her to start 3A by fall.

miquon & Spectrum math. Ds#2 picks up maths quicker than my older 2 dc. He flew threw Spectrum math K & 1 at age 5, so I wanted to extend him instead of pushing him through the levels at the speed he was going at that time. Miquon was great as it introduces all 4 arithmetic operations in the first book. Ds#2 loved miquon. He called it "math detectives." Miquon did take 'me' a while to get used to, but ds#2 had no problems. We continued to add in Spectrum math books until he finished the 3rd greade book. At that time I moved him to MUS as my other dc were using MUS.

Miquon Math and/or Singapore Math

My two older girls did all 6 Miquon books and then started Singapore with level 3A. My youngest didn't do well with Miquon because of the paper and ink (visual processing problems), so she did Singapore starting with 1A.

Both of these programs are great for kids who are good at math.
